In May 2016, I was lucky enough to travel to the breath-taking Greek island, Santorini.
It was a destination I have always wanted to experience and it did not disappoint in any way. The white cobbled streets and blue topped houses are exactly the way you imagine them to be. I already dedicated a blog post to the amazing wedding I was lucky enough to attend whilst on the Island so if you wish to take a look at what Santorini has to offer as a wedding destination please take a look.
I also feel that Santorini is the perfect honeymoon setting. It is romantic, relaxed and offers views like no other place I have ever visited. The ocean seems to go on forever, and the sunsets are like none I have witnessed anywhere else in the World – truly beautiful. The island itself is not very big but is becoming increasingly popular and therefore in peak season can become very busy. Therefore I would say the best time to travel to the island would be late May. The weather is still warm but it is not too crowded.
The prices of accommodation vary, depending on where you choose to stay. Oia is the most famous village in Santorini and can be quite pricey, yet it truly is gorgeous. Located at the top of a cliff, it boasts stunning views of the volcano of Palia. Oia has a small port which can be reached by taking the 300 steps down as well as being host to some of the most fabulous restaurants on the island.
Another village worth considering is Imerovigli. You can stay in cliff-side apartments and wake up every morning to the sun, ocean and each other! The village is the ultimate romantic destination and has numerous chapels and churches built on the rocks overlooking the blue sea which make the landscape even more alluring. I would highly recommend Mezzo if you choose to base yourself in Imerovigli; the food was delicious and the staff extremely accommodating – plus you can enjoy the sunset with a cold glass of wine in hand!
If you would prefer to be based by the beach, then Perrisa is the place for you. A gorgeous place, situated about 15km from the capital of Fira. Perrisa offers restaurants, hotels and bars to suit all budgets whilst allowing you to spend your days lazing by the ocean.
Fira itself is a busy town. It is sat on the edge of a cliff at a height of 260 meters which allows for great views over the volcano. The town has large numbers of restaurants, bars, night clubs and tourist spots, so if you are looking for a bit of a more upbeat honeymoon as oppose to a quiet, relaxing week away, then Fira is the spot for you to base yourself. If you are looking for a good night out then Two Brother’s bar is a great place to go! The drinks are not too expensive and the staff were lovely!
There are plenty of activities to do whilst staying in Santorini, from quad biking to wine tasting to boat trips. If you do your research, you can find some beautiful places to stay. The island is home to history, beauty and fun which is why it creates a perfect honeymoon destination as well as a wedding destination. I am sure that once you arrive at your chosen location, you will fall in love with the beauty of the island. I will certainly be returning!
